Khachaturian International Competition

Piano
June 6-13, 2027

 

The Khachaturian International Competition (hereinafter “Competition”) will be held from June 6 to 13, 2027, in Yerevan, Armenia, in the category of “Piano”.


Conditions of the Competition
 

The Competition is open to pianists of any citizenship or nationality who are at least 16 and no older than 35 years of age on the date of the Competition’s Opening Ceremony (June 6, 2027). Pianists who are former First prize winners of the Competition are not eligible to participate.

The Competition consists of a Primary Audition stage, based on submitted video recordings, and 3 rounds: 1st Round, 2nd Round (Semifinal), 3rd Round (Final).

24 participants will be selected to participate in the 1st Round of the Competition, following the Primary audition,

 

12 participants will be selected to participate in the 2nd Round.

 

4 participants will be selected to participate in the 3rd Round.

 

Based on the voting results, the Jury reserves the right to award the same place jointly to more than one candidate, except for First prize. The Jury's decision is final and is not subject to appeal.

 

After the results of the 2nd Round are announced, a discussion session with Jury members shall be organized for participants who are not selected for the 3rd Round. Jury members will provide a brief assessment of each participant's performance.

 

All pieces must be performed by heart in all rounds of the Competition (except Tolib Shakhidi’s Piano Sonata No. 2, which may be performed either by heart or from the score, at the contestant’s choice). The score is available via the following link - Click Here.  

 

The performance program submitted by a participant may not be changed after May 1. All participants are free to determine the order of the pieces they perform in the 1st and 2nd Rounds.

A performance dress code applies to all contestants.

 

The performances in the 3rd (Final) Round will be accompanied by the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, the official Orchestra of the Competition.

 

The 1st and 2nd Rounds of the Competition will be held at the Arno Babajanyan Concert Hall, and the 3rd Round will be held at the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall․

 

The pitch of the Orchestra and piano is set at 442 Hz.

Piano model: Steinway & Sons D (8' 11 ¾").

 

Participants will be provided with a free rehearsal room for 2 hours during the 1st and 2nd Rounds, and with 2 hours of rehearsal with the Orchestra in the 3rd Round.

 

During each round, the Competition will provide contestants with a warm-up room for 30 minutes before their performances.

 

The order of appearance of the participants shall be determined by the drawing of lots and shall remain unchanged throughout the Competition.

 

All rounds of the Competition are open to the public.

The contestants’ performances will be broadcast online. Live coverage will be available through the final contestant’s performance on each competition day. After the Competition concludes, only the performances of prize-winning contestants will remain available online.

All rights to the overall broadcast of the Competition, including its rounds and all audio and video recordings, belong to the Competition and will be made available to participants upon request only.

All finalists of the Competition are required to perform without financial remuneration at the Gala Concert and Award Ceremony of the Competition.

 

Selection of Candidates

All candidates must submit one or two links to video recordings of their performances, with a minimum duration of 15 minutes. For the Primary audition of the Competition, candidates must present one Classical-period composition and one Romantic-period composition (or a movement from each composition). The compositions presented during the Primary Audition may also be performed during the following three rounds of the Competition.

Each piece must be recorded without interruption or editing. The application form must include the exact titles of the compositions submitted for the audition, as well as the date and duration of the video recordings.

Candidates will be informed by e-mail of their selection for the 1st Round of the Competition. The results of the Primary audition will be announced on the Competition’s website on April 20, 2027

 

Participation Fee

Candidates who pass the Primary audition e must pay a Participation Fee equivalent to 200 euros in Armenian drams.

Payments can be made either via bank transfer or through an online payment system. The candidates selected as a result of the Primary audition will receive a link for the online payment of the Participation Fee.

 

The candidate should pay any bank transfer commission fee. The fee is not subject to reimbursement, regardless of the reason for non-attendance.

Candidates who transfer the money to the bank account of the Competition must clearly indicate their full names and the phrase “Fee for participation in the 2027 Khachaturian International Competition” in the Purpose of Payment* field.

How to Apply

The documents listed below should be attached to the completed application form:

 

  • A photocopy of the passport (JPEG or PDF format);
  • An autobiography in English (Microsoft Word file);
  • One high-resolution artistic photo (with a minimum size of 2 MB, JPEG format) for use in the Competition’s promotional materials;
  • Articles about the candidate published within the past five years, if available (JPEG or PDF format).

 

The deadline for applications is April 10, 2027

 

The Competition reserves the right to reject an application that does not comply with the Regulations of the Competition. Additional information may be required from a candidate, if necessary.

 

By applying to participate in the Competition, candidates give their consent to participate in all rounds of the Competition, in accordance with the Jury’s voting. During the application process, the Competition collects personal information about candidates for certain procedural needs of the Competition. Personal data is stored in a reliable database. Only the following details about the candidates are subject to publication: name, surname, date of birth, place of birth, nationality, biography, photos, personal website and social media profiles. Candidates may view their personal details and make changes in written form.

 

By submitting the application, candidates confirm their acceptance of all Conditions of the Competition.

The Organizing Committee of the Competition reserves the right to make certain adjustments before the launch of the Competition.

Information for Foreign Candidates

After receiving an invitation, foreign candidates should apply to the Armenian Embassy or Consulate in their countries for a visa, if required.  Some visas may also be obtained at Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan. Throughout the Competition, participants will be provided with free hotel accommodation in a single room and meals. The Competition does not cover accommodation and meal expenses for any accompanying person. Participants who are not selected to participate in the 2nd and 3rd Rounds but are willing to stay in Yerevan until the end of the Competition, shall cover all expenses themselves.
