17th Khachaturian International Competition / Conducting
June 6-12, 2021

The 17th Khachaturian International Competition (hereinafter Competition) is planned to be held from June 6 to 12, 2021 in Yerevan.

IMPORTANT NOTICE !

In view of the multitude of talented applicants with 36 years of age, the organizational committee of the Khachaturian International Competition has made a decision to raise the age margin of admission for applicants who have turned 36 within the period of January 1 to June 6, 2021.

Conditions of the Competition

The Competition is open for conductors, regardless of citizenship and nationality, aged at least 18 and no older than 35 years on the date of the opening ceremony of the Competition (June 6, 2021). Conductors, who are former First prize winners of the Competition, are not eligible to participate.

The Khachaturian International Conducting Competition consists of a Primary audition stage (selection by submitted video materials) and 2 rounds: 1st round, 2rd round (final).

No more than 18 participants will be selected to participate in the 1st round of the Competition, following the Primary video auditions.
No more than 6 participants will be selected to participate in the 2nd round.
In exceptional cases, a different number of participants may pass to the following rounds of the Competition upon the decision of the Chairperson of the Jury.
The Jury reserves the right to withhold a winning place altogether or share a place among candidates. The Jury's decision is final and is not subject to appeal.
After resuming the results of the 1st round, a discussion session will be organized with jury members and those participants who haven't passed to the 2nd round. Jury members will give a speech with brief description of each participant's performance.
By the end of the 2nd round all jury members will submit written reviews on each participant’s performance at the given round.
The performance program submitted by the participant may not be changed throughout the Competition.
All compositions must be conducted with the scores. Participants are required to have all necessary scores during all rounds and have learned the whole repertoire of the competition.
The order of appearance of participants shall be determined by randomly drawn lots and kept until the end of the Competition.

A performance dress code is instituted for candidates.
The 1st and 2rd rounds of competition are open to public. The broadcasting rights of the Competition and its rounds, all audio and video recordings as well as the right to their further use belong to the Competition and are made available to the participants per their request. The audio and video recordings of the participants' performances are kept uploaded till June 16, 2021 inclusive and then removed from the web with the exception of the performances of prize winning participants.

Participants of the Competition are not allowed to use or make available to third parties the video recordings of their performances, unless a written permission is granted by the Competition. All finalists of the Competition are required to give performances at the closing ceremony and the Laureates Concerts of the Competition as well as the concerts aimed at popularizing the Competition, with no financial remuneration

Selection of Candidates

All candidates must submit to the Competition the link to the video recordings of conducting performances (at a minimum duration of 15 minutes) of two pianos or an orchestra. The application form should include the exact title list of the compositions to be submitted for audition, with an indication of the date and duration of the video recordings.

Videos should be without interruption/editing during the performance of the piece. Only videos made later than June 6, 2019 shall be accepted. Only classical or romantic period compositions are accepted to the primary audition of the Competition. The compositions presented during Primary audition can be performed in the next rounds of the Competition as well.

Candidates will be informed of transferring to the 1st round of the Competition via e-mail. The results of Pre-selection will be announced on the Competition website on May 15, 2021.

Participation fee

A participation fee of €200 is set for the participation in the Competition.
Any bank transfer fee shall be paid by the applicant. The participation fee is not subject to reimbursement.
Foreign applicants should transfer the amount to the bank account of the Competition, clearly indicating their names and the phrase “Fee for participation in the 2021 Khachaturian international competition” in the Purpose of Payment field*.

How to Apply

Please complete the Application form here.

The completed application form should be attached with documents listed below:

  • Photocopy of the passport (JPEG or PDF format);
  • Autobiography in English (in Armenian and Russian as well, if available) (Microsoft Word file);
  • One high resolution artistic photo (at a minimal size of 2Mb, JPEG format) for use in the Competition promotional materials;
  • Copy of the participation fee payment order. No application will be considered without payment confirmation document. (JPEG or PDF format)
  • Articles about the candidate, published within the past five years, if available. (JPEG or PDF format),

The deadline of the applications is May 10, 2021.

The Competition reserves the right to reject an application which does not meet the regulations of the Competition. Additional information may be required from the participant, if necessary.
By applying to participate in the Competition, the candidates give their consent to participate in all rounds of the Competition, at the Jury’s choice. During the admission of applications, the Competition collects personal information regarding the participants for certain procedural needs of the Competition. Personal data is stored in a reliable database. Only the following details about the participants are subject to publishing: name; surname; date of birth, place of birth, nationality, biography, photos, personal website and social media profiles. The participants may view their personal details and make changes in written form.

By submitting the application, the candidates confirm their acceptance of all conditions of the Competition.

The organizing committee of the Competition reserves the right of certain adjustments no later than 1 month before the launch of the Competition.

Information for foreign participants

After receiving the invitation, foreign participants should apply to the Armenian Embassy or Consulate in their countries for visa, if required. The participants may get visa also at the Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan. Over the course of the Competition, free accommodation and meal at a hotel will be offered to participants. The Competition Management will not cover expenses for any accompanying person(s). Those participants who do not pass to the 2rd round but are willing to stay in Yerevan till the end of the Competition shall incur all expenses personally.
